My goal is teach students the skills and empower you with a self-directed process to solve your own fit problems and trust your own choices. For too long, sewists have had to rely on a designer to determine fit, style, and concept, limiting creative freedom. The Fair Fit Method gives that power back to you. It is a process of design that helps you understand your own body, shape, style, and proportion. Gaining the ability to problem-solve your own fit issues gives you more freedom in your sewing while building your confidence.

Your Ultimate Sewing Kit: The Fait Fit Method Baton Rouge Student Shopping List

Welcome to the Fait Fit Method family! You’ve signed up for your first sewing class at our Baton Rouge studio, and we are absolutely thrilled to join you on this creative journey. Stepping into a new hobby is exhilarating, but it can also come with a big question: “What do I actually need to buy?”

Walking into a craft store or browsing online for “sewing supplies” can be overwhelming. There are thousands of tools, gadgets, and gizmos, and it’s impossible to know what’s essential versus what’s a specialty item you won’t touch for years.

That’s where we come in.

We want your first day of class to be exciting, not stressful. We want you to feel confident, prepared, and ready to create. To set you up for success, we’ve meticulously curated the ultimate shopping list specifically for our Fait Fit Method students. This isn’t just a random list; these are the tools we use, the brands we trust, and the supplies that will make your sewing experience smoother, more professional, and infinitely more fun.

This list is your roadmap. You can purchase these items all at once or build your kit over time. Below, we’ve not only linked to each item but also explained why it’s on our list and how it will become a valuable part of your sewing practice.

Let’s build your perfect sewing kit!

1. The Heart of Your Studio: Sewing Machines & Sergers

This is the biggest and most exciting purchase! Your machine will become your creative partner. We primarily recommend Brother machines for their reliability, user-friendly features, and excellent value—they are perfect for growing with you from your first stitch to your first full garment.

A Quick Note: You only need one regular sewing machine to start. A serger (or “overlock machine”) is a fantastic, specialized machine for finishing seams and sewing with knits, but it’s not a “first day” requirement. We’ve listed options for both.

Recommended Sewing Machines

A good beginner machine should be sturdy, reliable, and not overly complicated. These models hit that sweet spot.

Recommended Sergers (For Later)

Again, this is not a beginner’s machine, but many students fall in love with serging. It creates those beautiful, durable, store-bought-looking seams.

2. Precision is Key: Your Cutting Toolkit

You’ve heard “measure twice, cut once.” In sewing, this is the golden rule. Clean, accurate cuts are the foundation of a good-looking final project. While a good pair of fabric shears is a must, modern sewing relies heavily on rotary cutters for speed and precision.

  • OLFA Rotary Cutter RTY-2/G (45mm)

    • Why we love it: This is the industry-standard 45mm rotary cutter. It’s safer than shears (with the blade guard) and allows you to cut curves and straight lines with buttery smoothness without lifting your fabric or pattern. This tool will change the way you sew. (You’ll also need a self-healing cutting mat to go with this!)

  • Fiskars Titanium Rotary Cutter Blade Replacement, 45mm, 5 Pack

    • Why we love it: A dull blade is a dangerous blade. It snags fabric and ruins your cuts. Buying refills in a pack means you’re never stuck with a dull blade in the middle of a project.

  • 3PCS Thread Snips

    • Why we love it: “Why do I need these if I have scissors?” you ask. These are not for cutting patterns. These are for the hundreds of tiny thread tails you’ll snip at your sewing machine. They are small, spring-loaded, and designed to sit right next to you for constant use. It’s an efficiency tool you’ll soon be unable to live without.

3. The Secret to Professional Sewing: Pressing & Adhesives

Here’s a secret from the pros: sewing is only 50% stitching. The other 50% is pressing.

Pressing your seams as you go is the single biggest difference between a project that looks “homemade” and one that looks “hand-crafted.” A hot iron and a good board are non-negotiable.

  • Yaheetech Foldable Ironing Board, Heavy Duty

    • Why we love it: You need a stable, sturdy surface. This heavy-duty board won’t wobble, and its adjustable height means you can set it to a comfortable level to prevent back strain during long pressing sessions.

  • Pellon Ultra Lightweight Fusible Interfacing, 15″ x 3 Yards

    • Why we love it: What is interfacing? Think of it as shapewear for your fabric. It’s a non-woven material that you fuse (iron) to the back of your main fabric to add structure, stability, and strength. It’s essential for things like button plackets, collars, cuffs, and waistbands. This lightweight version is the perfect starter interfacing.

  • Sewline Fabric Glue Pen Bundle (1 Pen, 3 Refills)

    • Why we love it: This little pen is magic. It’s a temporary, water-soluble glue that holds fabric in place before you sew. It’s 100x better than pins for tricky spots like matching plaids, holding zippers in place, or positioning appliqué. It doesn’t gum up your needle and washes right out.

4. Machine Essentials: Needles, Bobbins, & Feet

Your machine is only as good as its accessories. Using the right needle for your fabric and the right bobbin for your machine will save you hours of frustration.

  • 30Pack Plastic Sewing Machine Bobbins for Brother

    • Why we love it: CRITICAL: You must use the bobbins designed for your machine. Using the wrong size (even if it “looks close”) is the #1 cause of jammed threads and machine problems. This pack is specifically for Brother machines. You’ll want extras so you can wind different thread colors.

  • 1 Pcs Rubber Bobbin Holder (Purple)

    • Why we love it: This is a “quality of life” tool. Your bobbins will unwind and create a “thread nest” in your sewing box. This simple rubber ring holds them all neatly in one place.

  • Sewing Machine Needles, 50 PCS Universal Sewing Machine Needle

    • Why we love it: Needles are disposable! You should change your needle after every major project (or ~8 hours of sewing). This pack gives you a full range of universal needles. The smaller numbers (65/9, 75/11) are for lightweight fabrics like chiffon, and the larger numbers (90/14, 100/16) are for heavier fabrics like denim.

  • SCHMETZ Microtex Sharp Sewing Machine Needles – Size 70/10 (pack of 5)

    • Why we love it: While universal needles are great, some fabrics are tricky. Microtex needles are extra-sharp and designed for puncturing delicate or dense fabrics (like microfiber, silk, or vinyl) cleanly without snagging.

  • Presser Foot Set 42Pcs, for Low Shank Machines

    • Why we love it: This kit is your key to unlocking your machine’s potential. Your machine comes with a few feet, but this set gives you everything: a zipper foot, buttonhole foot, rolled hem foot, walking foot, and so many more. In our Baton Rouge classes, we’ll show you how these feet make difficult tasks incredibly simple.

  • Magnetic Seam Guide

    • Why we love it: This is a beginner’s best friend. Sewing a straight line is all about keeping your seam allowance (the distance from the edge of the fabric to the stitches) consistent. This little magnet attaches to the metal plate of your machine and creates a physical “wall” for your fabric to guide against.

5. The Nitty-Gritty: Essential Notions & Supplies

“Notions” is the sewing word for all the small, essential accessories. This is where your sewing kit really comes to life.

  • Gutermann Thread Set, Multi-Colour, 100m

    • Why we love it: Don’t skimp on thread! Cheap thread is fuzzy, weak, and will clog your machine with lint. Gutermann is a high-quality, all-purpose polyester thread that is strong and smooth. This set gives you a great starter palette.

  • Sewing Clips, 100 Pcs

    • Why we love it: Move over, pins! These clips are a modern sewing essential. They hold fabric layers together without leaving permanent pinholes (critical for vinyl or leather) and are much easier to handle, especially on thick layers or curves. Plus, you’ll never accidentally sew over one!

  • YAKA 60 Pack of 7-Inch Mix Nylon Coil Zippers

    • Why we love it: You’ll be making bags, pouches, and garments, and you’ll need zippers. This bulk pack gives you a rainbow of colors to play with, so you’ll always have one on hand that matches your project.

  • Renashed 50pcs 21.5-Inch Nylon Invisible Zippers (Black&White)

    • Why we love it: These are different from the coil zippers. Invisible zippers hide in the seam of a garment (like a skirt or dress) for a truly professional finish. Having a stock of basic black and white is a must.

  • Tortoise 4 Cones of White Serger Thread

    • Why we love it: This is only if you buy a serger. Sergers use 3-4 cones of thread at once, so you need these large spools.

  • Black Serger Thread, 4 Cones

    • Why we love it: The other serger essential. Between black and white, you’ll have 90% of your serging projects covered.

6. Studio Comfort & Machine Care

Finally, let’s talk about taking care of yourself and your machine. Sewing should be a joy, not a strain.

  • Betsey Johnson Women’s Plaid 3 Pack Reading Glasses

    • Why we love it: Sewing involves a lot of close, detailed work. A pair of “cheaters” or reading glasses, even if you don’t normally wear them, can dramatically reduce eye strain, making it easier to thread needles and see your stitches. And why not look cute while you do it?

  • 1oz Fine Light Sewing Machine Oil

    • Why we love it: A sewing machine is a machine with metal parts. It needs to be cleaned and oiled regularly to run smoothly. A tiny drop of oil in the right places (check your manual!) keeps it quiet, prevents seizing, and extends its life by years.

You’re All Set!

We know this looks like a long list, but don’t be intimidated. Every single item here is an investment in your new skill, a tool that will remove frustration and let your creativity flow.

We built this list so you can bypass the confusion and get straight to the fun part: making beautiful things. Gather your new kit, bring your excitement, and get ready.

We can’t wait to see you at the Fait Fit Method studio in Baton Rouge!
