What Students Say About The Fair Fit Skirt
From total beginners to sewing pros with 30 years of experience, the Fair Fit Method is changing how people approach pattern making. Here is what our students have to say about finding their perfect fit.
My daughter started sewing classes with Fair Fit/Andrea at a very young age. Andrea has a way of meeting her students where they are, teaching them basics and encouraging them to explore their skills to improve and be creative. As my daughter has furthered her studies Andrea has continued to be a wonderful teacher, mentor, sounding board, and all around asset to her in her career path and goals. Whether you are a novice looking to learn to sew or to improve your sewing skills, Fair Fit is the perfect fit.
I've been taking sewing classes with Adrea for over two years now. I enjoy every lessons and she is down to earth. We've been making dresses (that I could wear to work). Altering my unfitted wardrobe to have them fit me better (Lord help me, I'm a shorty 😆). She is very knowledgeable about clothes and how to solve difficult problems. Overall, if you want to learn a new hobby or just need to take some lessons to learn how to fix your clothes, I highly recommend her.
FairFit is amazing! Andrea took me from a complete beginner who was totally afraid to touch a sewing machine (I was just so sure I was going to break it, y'all. you have no idea how skittish I was) to a sewing junkie with a huge list of cool finished projects that I never dreamed I would be able to tackle when I first started. I've made cool clothes, costumes, amazing bags, swimsuits, bras, and the spiked purple denim jacket of my dreams. I've made David Bowie inspired leggings as well as dresses for job interviews. Not only has she given me expert instruction and taught me the fundamentals, she's really encouraged and helped develop my creativity as well. I can not recommend FairFit enough.
My daughter has been sewing with Andrea for seven years starting at age nine. I can’t even begin to tell you how many amazing projects that they have completed together in that time. My daughter is very creative and knows exactly how she wants her projects to look. She will come in with a drawing and Andrea helps her turn it into reality. About five years ago, I decided to take lessons myself and I love it! Andrea is a patient and wonderful teacher and I have learned so much from altering clothes that don’t fit to creating costume masterpieces. Andrea is our fashion fairy godmother!
My daughter was dealing with extreme anxiety 8 years ago. When we were looking for an activity that may help, we were recommended sewing lessons with Andrea. It turned out to be an amazing way for her to build her confidence and express herself in sewing creations. Andrea is the perfect blend of positive support, and just the right amount of challenging my daughter’s abilities to promote growth and self-assuredness while working on sewing projects in lessons. This has definitely spilled over into her life outside of lessons. Projects my daughter has completed run the gamut from a simple tote bag, to a new favorite pair of everyday pants, to costume show pieces. Andrea uses each project chosen by my daughter to teach new and important techniques, such as how to create your own pattern when there isn’t one for what you want to make, and how to alter patterns or existing pieces to fit you better, or even how to get faster at a technique that you learned in an earlier lesson. 8 years later, my daughter is quite an accomplished sewist, yet is always learning more from Andrea. She still always very much looks forward to attending her sewing lessons.
She is a tremendous sewing instructor. I went from no experience to making clothes I could wear in 2 lessons. Would highly recommend.
I can’t possibly recommend Andrea and Fair Fit Studio enough! Andrea has been teaching my daughter sewing lessons for about 6 years. Not only is she incredibly talented, but she is so patient and encouraging. Any idea my daughter has, Andrea just says “Let’s figure out how to do it,” including a formal dress that my daughter designed. She is absolutely amazing—wish I could give her 10 stars!
I started lessons with Andrea with absolutely zero sewing experience. She taught me the basics in a way that was easy to understand, and as I got more comfortable, I began bringing in whatever project I was working on at the time. I took lessons regularly for about a year and still come back occasionally if I need help with something specific. I even signed my husband up, and she taught him how to sew too! Andrea is patient, knowledgeable, and fun to learn from. I always left our sessions feeling more confident in my skills, and along the way we genuinely became friends. I can’t recommend her enough. Whether you’re a complete beginner or just need help with a tricky project, she’s fantastic. 10/10! Edit to add: I even did a little “fashion show” where I got to show off something I made in my lessons which was this jacket that is still a staple in my wardrobe! Also added a photo of a halloween costume I made for my sister who went as Justin Hawkins from The Darkness in "I Believe in a Thing Called Love."
I started working with Andrea in 2017 when I wanted to learn how to sew. In 2018 I moved to Georgia and tried other instructors but always knew I had the best in Baton Rouge. Andrea is extremely efficient with the lesson time, incredibly knowledgeable, and so much fun to be around. We now work over FaceTime and I always make sure I schedule several hours with her when I am in town. We have followed patterns and created our own. She is the BEST!
Andrea is an incredible teacher! I’ve learned so much from her in the past year — not just how to sew — but how to really understand garment construction, adjust patterns for my body, and create pieces I’m really proud to wear. Her experience and expertise in fine arts and garment design really shines through in how she teaches. She has this incredible ability to make complex techniques like draping, fit, and alterations approachable and clear (even for newbies like me). Andrea’s teaching style is both patient and motivating. She creates a space for you where it feels safe to learn, try, and grow. I always leave class not only more knowledgeable but also energized to keep creating. Trust me, there’s no better feeling than when someone compliments what you’re wearing and you can proudly say, “Thanks, I sewed it myself!” If you want to sew and create with the very best, Andrea is the teacher you need — and Fair Fit is the place to learn.

40+ Step-by-Step Video Lessons: High-quality tutorials guiding you through draping, fitting, and sewing.
The Fair Fit Skirt Pattern & Book: Physical and digital tools to help you master pattern making.

Your Path to a Custom Fit
We’ve distilled the complex art of draping drafting into a clear, step-by-step path to mastery. This is your choose-your-own-adventure for sewing.
Start by analyzing your unique shape rather than forcing yourself into a standard size. You will learn to take accurate measurements of your three critical zones—waist, midriff, and hips—and select the specific Fair Fit pattern blocks that match your proportions. This foundational step eliminates the common sizing errors found in commercial patterns, giving you a customized starting point before you even cut the fabric.
Instead of wasting expensive fabric on a muslin you'll throw away, you will use our signature Raw Finish method to sew a wearable "test" skirt. This technique allows you to drape the garment directly on your body or dress form, making real-time adjustments to the fit and silhouette. You’ll see exactly how to make a skirt that moves with you, ensuring the final result is comfortable and flattering.
Once you are happy with the fit of your test garment, you will learn the professional pattern making skill of transferring those adjustments back to your paper pattern. This process creates a personalized "sloper"—a master pattern that is a perfect 2D replica of your 3D shape. Having this custom blueprint means you can sew future skirts with confidence, knowing the hard work of fitting is already done.
Now that the fit is mastered, you can embrace the creative side of fashion design. We show you how to use your custom sloper to manipulate the blocks into various styles, from sleek pencil skirts to flared A-lines. You will gain the freedom to mix and match fabrics, lengths, and details, effectively becoming the designer of your own handmade wardrobe.

“Sewing is generally something that you do on your own so it can be difficult to learn new things. Going through this course I learned new tips that I’ll use to improve my sewing and save me time. "A fantastic break from standard fitting, the Fair Fit method offers a creative, intuitive approach for anyone who has struggled to fit flat patterns to a 3D body. This course provides a fresh perspective for all skill levels. I loved it—the mix-and-match 'Lego-like' patterns are truly addictive!"

“In all of the preparation, I had a few doubts, but I trusted myself and knowing that I can make good sewing decisions. Trusting my gut really gave me confidence to take on more projects. Now that I have made my first top, I kind of wish I had gone a little more crazy with it and experimented more with the stitching. At first I was nervous and then I realized I can just go at it. ”

Hi, I’m Andrea. I founded the Fair Fit Method to bridge the gap between the fashion industry and the home sewist. With an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and years of experience as a costume seamstress for films like Pitch Perfect 2, I’ve seen firsthand how clothes are really made.
I believe learning how to make a skirt shouldn’t be a struggle. My goal is to demystify complex fashion design concepts—like draping and pattern drafting—so you can stop guessing and start creating. I’ve taught hundreds of students how to love their bodies and their sewing machines again. Let’s make something beautiful together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all! While we cover intermediate concepts like pattern making and draping, the course is designed to guide you step-by-step. If you can thread your machine and sew a straight line, you can succeed in this course.
You will need a standard sewing machine, an iron, basic sewing tools (scissors, pins, tape measure), and fabric. A dress form is helpful for the draping section, but we teach methods to work without one as well.
Yes and no. We provide you with the "Fair Fit" pattern blocks (the Lego-like pieces). We then teach you how to alter, manipulate, and combine them to create your own unique patterns. This is often easier and more accurate than drafting from a blank sheet of paper.
Commercial patterns use standardized sizing that rarely fits real bodies. The Fair Fit Method teaches you to customize the pattern before you cut your final fabric, ensuring a bespoke fit every time.
The Raw Finish is our signature method for creating a "test" garment that is still wearable. It allows for easy alterations. The Clean Finish is the traditional way to sew a final garment with linings and facings once your fit is perfect.
